Wire cutting, also known as wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM), is a specialized manufacturing process that uses a thin, electrically charged wire to cut through conductive materials. The principle behind WEDM involves the use of a fine brass or copper wire, which acts as an electrode. When a high-frequency electrical current passes between the wire and the workpiece, it generates sparks that erode the material, creating a precise cut. This process occurs in a dielectric fluid, which cools the workpiece and flushes away the eroded particles.
The technique is highly versatile, allowing for the production of intricate shapes and contours with tight tolerances. It's widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, tool and die making, and electronics, where precision and accuracy are paramount. WEDM can cut hard and exotic metals, including those that are difficult to machine using conventional methods, without causing thermal distortion.
