Wire EDM, or Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM), is a precision machining technology that utilises the principle of electrical spark discharge for material removal. This technology uses a thin metal wire as the tool electrode and applies a pulsed voltage to the conductive workpiece to be machined to generate a spark discharge, which enables precise cutting of the material.WEDM is particularly suited to the machining of materials such as cemented carbide and mould steel, which are difficult to handle by conventional mechanical methods.
During the WEDM process, a wire moves across the workpiece and cuts according to a pre-set path, enabling very high positional and dimensional accuracy, often down to the micron level. In addition, with the appropriate parameter settings, extremely smooth surface quality can be achieved, reducing the need for subsequent processing. The technology is renowned for its flexibility, making it easy to cope with the processing of complex shapes, and is suitable for the manufacture of a wide range of precision parts, moulds and high-precision components for the aerospace industry, amongst others.
The advantages of WEDM also include its wide applicability, which is not limited to electrically conductive materials, but is also effective for harder materials; at the same time, it helps to maintain the original physical properties of the workpiece without deformation due to the low level of heat generated during the machining process. Although the initial investment in equipment is large, but because of its high efficiency and low scrap rate, in the long run has a better cost-effectiveness. With the continuous progress of technology, the future of wire cutting processing will be more intelligent and automated, providing strong support for more areas of application.

Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) is a precision machining technology that utilises the principle of electrical spark erosion to cut conductive materials. It is capable of handling many types of materials, especially hard or brittle materials that are difficult to process by traditional machining methods. The following are some of the common materials that can be processed using wire EDM:
1. Metal alloys: These include various tool steels, stainless steels, titanium alloys, nickel-based high temperature alloys, and so on. These materials are typically high strength and corrosion resistant, and are commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive manufacturing and medical devices.
2. Cemented carbides: such as tungsten-cobalt cemented carbides, these materials are extremely hard and are suitable for application scenarios that require extremely wear-resistant workpieces.
3. Mould steel: Used in the manufacture of various moulds, such as plastic moulds and stamping dies. WEDM processing enables high precision and surface quality, which is ideal for applications where a high level of detail is required in the mould making process.
4. Copper and its alloys: Pure copper, brass, and bronze, etc. These materials are widely used in the electronics industry, and wire EDM can be used to manufacture precision parts or circuit boards.
5. Aluminium and its alloys: Although aluminium is relatively soft and easy to work with, it is often used in wire-cutting applications, especially when very fine shapes or complex geometries are required.
Special materials: In addition to the above, some special conductive materials, such as certain forms of ceramics (if they have been suitably treated to ensure conductivity), composites, etc., may also be suitable, depending on the material properties and processing conditions.
