Aluminum extrusion is a manufacturing process where aluminum alloy material is forced through a die of a specific cross-sectional profile to produce various shapes. This versatile technique allows for the creation of complex sections with excellent surface finish and tight tolerances.
The process starts with billets, aluminum logs cut to length. These are preheated in a furnace to around 900°F (482°C) without melting, making them malleable enough for extrusion. After heating, the billet is transferred to the extruder press, where a ram pushes it through the die. High pressure is applied, causing the softened metal to flow out in the shape defined by the die opening. Lubricants may be used to reduce friction between the billet and the cylinder wall.
Extruded parts emerge from the die and are cooled rapidly using water or air, depending on the alloy's properties. Rapid cooling preserves the mechanical characteristics and prevents grain growth that could compromise strength. The extrusions are then stretched to straighten them and relieve internal stresses, which can cause warping. Finally, they undergo an aging process either naturally at room temperature or artificially in ovens, enhancing hardness and durability.
Post-extrusion, the profiles might be machined, welded, painted, or coated for protection or aesthetic purposes. Quality control checks ensure dimensional accuracy and surface quality meet specifications. Aluminum extrusion is favored for its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and ability to produce components for diverse industries, including automotive, construction, aerospace, and consumer goods.

The combination of Aluminum Extrusion and CNC Machining (Computer Numerical Control) has greatly improved the efficiency and product quality of industrial manufacturing. The aluminum extrusion process can produce long or continuous profiles with complex cross-sectional shapes, which can be precisely cut, drilled, milled, etc. in subsequent CNC machining to meet specific application requirements.
In CNC machining, aluminum extrusions usually undergo the following treatments:
1、Cutting: Use a CNC sawing machine or a laser cutting machine to precisely cut the extruded profile to the desired length. Because aluminum is soft and easy to process, a very smooth cutting edge can be obtained.
Drilling: The CNC drilling machine can be programmed to drill holes of different diameters at designated locations for assembling screws or other fasteners. The automatic drilling process ensures the consistency and accuracy of the hole position.
2、Milling: CNC milling machines can perform multi-axial surface trimming and surface processing on extruded parts, removing unwanted parts of the material to form complex geometric structures such as grooves, grooves or raised features.
3、Tapping: Where an internal thread connection is required, the CNC machine can perform a precise tapping operation to ensure thread quality and fit.
4Finishing: In order to improve the appearance or increase corrosion resistance, the parts after the above process can also be anodized, powder spraying and other surface treatment.
